- Achieve high standards in all areas of the curriculum.
- Respond to challenges and seize new experiences whole–heartedly.
- Take an active lead in their own learning and development throughout their life.
- Develop the spirit of enquiry leading to life-long learning.
OUR VISION FOR THIS SUBJECT
Children’s critical thinking skills can be developed, their motivation to learn increased, and their knowledge and understanding of, and empathy with people and their beliefs, religious or otherwise, will be enhanced.
By using an enquiry-based model well, children’s critical thinking skills can be developed, their motivation to learn increased, and their knowledge and understanding of, and empathy with people and their beliefs, religious or otherwise, will be enhanced. This approach takes very seriously the philosophy that children are free to make their own choices and decisions concerning religion and belief.
Cheswick Green Primary School uses Discovery RE curriculum.
Discovery RE is a comprehensive set of detailed medium-term planning for Religious Education from Nursery to Year 6.
There are 64 enquiry modules deliver engaging and challenging RE lessons with confidence which include: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.
The children start from their own experience to ensure understanding of the concept being studied then move into investigating that concept in depth from the point of view of the chosen religion. This continues over three lessons of investigation and discussion throughout Step 2, which embeds subject knowledge. These lessons not only support the children with embedding their RE knowledge, but also contribute to their oracy and critical thinking skills. In Step 3, they complete an assessment activity to evaluate the question again in light of their new knowledge, and have further opportunities to embed their own reflections on the learning in Step 4.
The impact of our curriculum will enable children to:
- Develop critical thinking skills
- Use personal reflection to develop on their own thoughts and feelings
- Grow in subject knowledge about different religions and nurture spiritual development
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Topics are presented using a variety of views and beliefs so that pupils are able to form their own, informed opinions but also respect that others have the right to different opinions. Teachers should never feel obliged to discuss their own beliefs unless they feel comfortable doing so and can ensure that this will not influence or restrict the children’s own expression.
Discovery RE is written as a universal core curriculum provision for all children. Inclusivity is part of its philosophy. Teachers will tailor each enquiry to meet the needs of the children in their classes. To support this differentiation, many enquiries suggest creative learning activities that allow children to choose the media with which they work and give them scope to work to their full potential. To further help teachers differentiate for children in KS1 and 2 classes with special educational needs, each enquiry has level exemplars for the full range likely for that age group, allowing children to evidence levels from L1 to L5.
